The first, preservation, is realized, first of all, in the work of the museum fund - acquisition, recording and storage of museum collections , organizing and cataloging of archival and library materials.

The second area, the study, is realized in the scientific activity of the museum, in researches on the history of science and technology.

The third area, the popularization, is implemented in the exposition and exhibition activity of the museum: the establishment and activity of the permanent exhibition and thematic exhibitions, guided tours, lectures and seminars, participation in educational activities of JINR University Center, schools and Dubna University. In addition, in the third area of the museum activity there is a set of tasks for the development of its permanent exhibition.

Educational programs of the museum, education of the general public in the field of nuclear physics and elementary particle physics and the development of public interest in the activities of the Institute and basic research in nuclear physics in general are carried out on the basis of the constant exposition.

One of the key goals of the museum in this direction is to attract the attention of young people, the formation of broad interest among young people in the activities of the Institute and scientific researches on physics as a whole. Work towards this goal requires solutions to pressing problems of staffing JINR with young professionals and domestic fundamental science in general. Therefore, working with young people is a priority for the museum.
